What can you apply for a subsidy for?

You can receive a subsidy if you generate renewable (sustainable) energy using solar panels, wind turbines, or hydropower. You can apply for this subsidy in various categories of installations, categorized by capacity (the amount of energy the installation can generate).

View the categories, the amounts you receive per kilowatt hour (kWh) generated and the technical requirements for your installation:

    How does the subsidy work?

The SCE is an operating subsidy. This means you receive a subsidy for the electricity you generate with your system (an amount per kWh).

We calculate this amount as follows:

    • Every year, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) sets a base rate for each type of system. This base rate is the amount per kWh required to make the system profitable for you.
    • The base amount for the year you apply applies for the entire 15-year subsidy period. This means you have long-term certainty about the return on your investment.
    • The subsidy you receive per kWh is the difference between the base amount and a correction amount. The correction amount is the market price for electricity. The PBL (Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency) determines this annually.
    • If the electricity price rises, you'll receive less subsidy. You'll then receive more compensation from the market for your generated kWh. If the electricity price falls, you'll receive less compensation from the market for your generated kWh. You'll then receive more subsidy, ensuring your system remains profitable. The correction amount is never lower than the base energy price.
    • If the correction amount is equal to or higher than the basic amount, you will not receive a subsidy.
    • You will only receive a subsidy if VertiCer provides you with certificates (guarantees of origin, GVO) for the electricity you generate.

    Determine your postal code area

The members of your energy cooperative or homeowners' association (private individuals or businesses) and the system must live or be located within a specific postal code area, known as a postcode area. The postal code in which your system is located and the adjacent postal codes belong to this postcode area. The postcode map of the Netherlands determines the postcode area.

The following conditions also apply to the postcode lottery:

    • In a cooperative, the participating members live within the postal code area, or the companies are located here.
    • Are you a homeowners' association (VvE)? Then at least 75% of the members live or are located within the postal code area.
    • You can place your installation in the center of the postcode rose or in one of the 'leaves' of the rose.
    • Is your business located within the postcode area? Then you can participate in the energy cooperative as a member. However, you must have a small-scale connection. A small-scale connection to the electricity grid has a total maximum throughput of 3 x 80 amps.
    • It is an operating subsidy (so not a one-off investment contribution)

Why is the SCE important?

  • Makes local energy projects financially feasible

  • Increase citizen participation in the energy transition

  • Successor to the old postcode lottery scheme

In short: The SCE subsidy helps local groups to generate sustainable energy together and to receive financial support for this for years to come.
